Union of Journalists of Tajikistan

The Union of Journalists of Tajikistan (塔吉克斯坦記者聯盟) is Tajikistan’s oldest national journalists’ organization. It was established in 1959 at the first congress of journalists of what was then the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic. The union describes itself as an independent, self-governing public organization. It brings together journalists’ unions from the country’s regions, cities and districts, with branches in the Khatlon, Sughd and Gorno-Badakhshan regions. Its Dushanbe office is at 16 Sadi Sherozi Avenue, the same building that houses the state news agency Khovar and the state newspaper Jumhuriyat. The union operates in a severely restricted media environment. In 2024, a European Parliament motion on state repression against independent media noted that dozens of Tajik journalists had gone into exile. In October 2026, the union signed a cooperation agreement with the All-China Journalists Association (中華全國新聞工作者協會), or ACJA, a Chinese Communist Party-led professional association that serves a key role in implementing press control policies. The agreement provides for building a joint “Tajikistan and China Journalists’ Home” mechanism. A day later, the union joined the ACJA’s International Home of Journalists (國際記者之家).
