Xinhua North America Regional Bureau

The North America Regional Bureau (新華社北美總分社) of Xinhua News Agency, China’s state news agency and an institution directly under the State Council, was formally established in New York in October 2008. According to Xinhua, the bureau oversees nine bureaus in the United States and Canada, including those in Washington, at the United Nations, and in Ottawa and Toronto. In May 2011, the bureau moved into the 44th floor of 1540 Broadway in Times Square. China’s ambassador to the United Nations and its consul general in New York attended the ribbon-cutting. In February 2020, the US State Department designated Xinhua’s US operations a “foreign mission,” one of fiveChinese state media organizations covered in the first round of designations. In August 2022, the North America branch of the Cangzhou International Communication Center (滄州市國際傳播中心) was unveiled in Times Square. Chinese scholars have described that branch as drawing on the “advantages” of Xinhua’s overseas offices.
