Want Want Group Chairman Meets Taiwan Affairs Office Director Following China Times Acquisition

Following his acquisition of the China Times Group (中國時報集團) in November 2008, Want Want Group (旺旺集團) chairman Tsai Eng-meng (蔡衍明) met with Taiwan Affairs Office (國台辦) director Wang Yi (王毅) in Beijing. According to an account subsequently published in Want Want’s internal company newsletter Want Want Monthly (旺旺月刊) and later reported by CommonWealth Magazine (天下雜誌), Tsai told Wang Yi that the acquisition was intended to promote cross-strait relations and that his outlets would follow instructions to report positively on the mainland. Wang Yi expressed the Taiwan Affairs Office’s full support for the China Times Group. The exchange was later cited by scholar He Qinglian (何清漣) in her book Red Infiltration (紅色滲透) as emblematic of CCP-aligned Taiwan media ownership.

Want Want China Times Media Group Chairman Meets CPPCC Chairman Wang Yang in Beijing

Want Want Holdings (旺旺集團) and Want Want China Times Media Group (旺旺中時媒體集團) chairman Tsai Eng-meng (蔡衍明) led a delegation to Beijing in July 2018, visiting several Chinese state media organizations and meeting with Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) chairman Wang Yang (汪洋), a Politburo Standing Committee member and one of the six most senior officials in the CCP hierarchy. The visit was reported by CitiOrange in an April 2019 investigation citing a Reporters Without Borders report on Chinese media expansion. Wang Yang subsequently referenced his meeting with Tsai at the Fourth Cross-Strait Media Summit in May 2019, recounting that Tsai had told him that maintaining the 1992 Consensus position was making his situation very difficult.

Chinese Embassy in Russia Hosts Media Reception

The Chinese Embassy in Moscow hosted a reception for Russian mainstream media on January 23, 2026, attended by over 400 guests including Chinese Ambassador Zhang Hanhui (張漢暉), Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, and TASS Director General Andrey Kondrashov. Ambassador Zhang emphasized that China-Russia relations are at “unprecedented high levels” and called on media to “sound the main theme of China-Russia friendship for generations” — “friendship” being a term the Chinese Communist Party typically uses to condition relationships on accommodating China’s core interests. Zakharova praised bilateral media cooperation for “adhering to the mission of conveying truth, combating false information, and defending historical justice” to “lay a solid public opinion foundation” for relations. Zhang presented certificates to 22 Russian media outlets recognizing their contributions to “consolidating China-Russia relations and friendship for generations.” The event marked the 30th anniversary of China-Russia strategic partnership.

China-Vietnam Border Media Coordination Meeting

Chinese and Vietnamese propaganda officials met in Lao Cai Province, Vietnam on February 2, 2026 to establish formal mechanisms for cross-border media cooperation. The Chinese delegation was led by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Federation (紅河僑聯) of Honghe Prefecture in talks with Lao Cai’s Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department (老街省委宣傳與民運部) and provincial media outlets including Lao Cai Newspaper and Radio-Television Station (老街省報紙與廣播電視台). Participants agreed to create “regular mutual visit and information sharing mechanisms” focused on coordinating coverage of cross-border cooperation, cultural heritage, and development issues. The meeting emphasized using “new media to innovate communication forms” and expand influence, framing media as a “key bridge” for “consolidating China-Vietnam traditional friendship.” The arrangement represents localized implementation of CCP strategy to build propaganda coordination infrastructure with Vietnamese counterparts.

Chinese Consul General in Alexandria Publishes Article on China-Arab Media Cooperation

On December 25, 2021, Chinese Consul General in Alexandria Zhao Liying (赵丽莹) published a signed article titled “Strengthening Media Exchange and Cooperation, Working Together to Build a China-Arab Community with a Shared Future for the New Era” (加强媒体交流合作 携手打造面向新时代的中阿命运共同体) on Egyptian media websites including Al-Ahram Al-Arabi (阿拉伯国民) and Platform News (平台新闻). The article touted the Fifth China-Arab Broadcasting and Television Cooperation Forum, which Zhao praised as a success. The forum was attended by Huang Kunming (黄坤明), member of the Political Bureau of the CCP Central Committee and head of the CCP’s Central Propaganda Department, and Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, both participating via video. The forum adopted a joint declaration announcing cooperation achievements including a co-production between Fujian Broadcasting Group’s Strait TV and Egypt National Television.

Xinhua and AFP Mark 60th Anniversary of News Exchange

On September 12, 2017, Xinhua News Agency President Cai Mingzhao (蔡名照) met with Agence France-Presse (AFP) President Emmanuel Hoog in Beijing to discuss cooperation in new media development, photography, short videos, financial information, and technology services. The meeting marked the 60th anniversary of news exchange agreements between the two agencies, which began in 1957. Cai expressed hopes to “increase communications and cooperation.” At the same time, AFP’s president said that the agencies had “maintained long-term cooperative relations” and hoped to “share more experiences in the future.” No formal agreement was signed during the meeting.

Chinese Ambassador Meets Montenegro Minister of Media

On December 5, 2025, Chen Xufeng (陈绪峰), China’s ambassador to Montenegro, paid a visit to Media and Culture Minister of Montenegro Tamara Vujović. According to a readout from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Chen said that the “traditional friendship” between China and Herzegovina has lasted for a long time, and people-to-people exchanges have “achieved remarkable results.” China, said Chen, attaches “great importance to strengthening exchanges and cooperation with Montenegro in the field of culture and media,” with a series of related events planned for the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2026. The MFA readout quoted Vujović as having praised the achievements of “Chinese-style modernization.” According to Hungarian reports, Vujović and Chen were also guests at a cultural festival in the town of Herceg Novi in September 2025. 

Guangxi Administration College Delegation Visits Jian Hua Daily

On October 22, 2025, a delegation from the School of Marxism at the Guangxi Administration College (廣西行政學院, a provincial-level educational institute, visited Cambodia’s Chinese-language Jianhua Daily (柬華日報). According to coverage by Jianhua Daily, the delegation met with newspaper president Huang Huanming (黃煥明) to discuss what the outlet characterized as “deepening the Cambodia-China friendship,” including through cooperation on media and culture. The language of “friendship” is a typical frame used by China to characterize bilateral relations as well as people-to-people exchanges. The Chinese delegation was led by Hong Mingxing (洪明星), vice dean of the School of Marxism, who described Cambodia and China as “ironclad brothers” (鐵桿兄弟) — this being a term generally reserved in Chinese state media only for China’s relationships with Cambodia and Pakistan, which have historically enjoyed close political alignment. The Jian Hua Daily, founded in Cambodia in 2000, is published by the Federation of Cambodian Chinese (柬華理事總會).

Taiwan Social Media Influencers Join Yunnan Tour

On August 6-10, 2025, in Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province, the Taiwan Affairs Office of Yunnan People’s Government (雲南省人民政府台灣事務辦公室) and the Honghe Prefectural Taiwan Affairs Office (紅河州台辦) hosted an official media visit that brought together 17 Taiwanese new media practitioners and 8 mainland journalists in what organizers described as promoting “cross-strait family bonds” (兩岸一家親). The event, “Hearts Connected Across the Strait, Yunnan-Taiwan Together” (第三屆”情牽兩岸·滇台同行”), included visits and cultural activities in several local counties. Official reports cited participants like “new media person” Wu Minwen (吳旻文), who appears nowhere in Taiwan’s media or social media landscape, claiming that the initiative helps “more people on the island understand Honghe.” Another participant cited, Li Xiangming (李湘銘), was quoted as saying that traditional foods they tasted were “cultural symbols carrying deep history.”
