Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Gives Interview to Singapore Media Outlets

On September 8, 2012, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying (傅瑩) gave an interview to Singapore’s The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao (聯合早報) during her official visit. Fu employed typical Chinese diplomatic rhetoric, emphasizing “mutual benefit,” “win-win cooperation,” and “peaceful development” while describing China-ASEAN relations as “extraordinary.” She positioned China as exercising “self-restraint” on South China Sea disputes while arguing other parties made “provocations.” She framed China’s military modernization as necessary for “peaceful development” rather than assertiveness. Fu characterized U.S. “rebalancing” to Asia with cautious language about its “largely military” focus. The messaging reflected standard Chinese diplomatic communication patterns, presenting China as a responsible regional power while subtly critiquing other actors through measured phrasing designed for international media consumption.

Xi Pens Article in Chilean Newspaper Before Visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) published a signed article titled “Jointly Creating a Better Future for China-Chile Relations” (共同開創中國和智利關係更加美好的未來) in Chile’s El Mercurio (信使報) newspaper on November 22, 2016, ahead of his state visit. In the article, Xi described Chile as a “country at the end of the world” with beautiful scenery and praised its people for creating a “development miracle.” He noted that despite geographic distance, the two nations shared deep connections, referencing how Chilean poet Pablo Neruda called China a “great brother.” Xi highlighted several diplomatic “firsts,” including Chile being the first South American country to establish relations with the PRC on December 15, 1970, and the first Latin American country to sign a bilateral free trade agreement with China in 2005. Xi claimed bilateral trade reached $31.8 billion in 2015, “making China Chile’s largest trading partner and Chile China’s third-largest trade partner in Latin America.”

Xi Pens Article in Greek Newspaper Before Visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) published a signed article titled “Let the Wisdom of Ancient Civilizations Illuminate the Future” (讓古老文明的智慧照鑑未來) in Greece’s Kathimerini newspaper on November 10, 2019. The piece appeared ahead of his three-day state visit to Greece at the invitation of President Prokopis Pavlopoulos (Προκόπης Παυλόπουλος). Xi drew parallels between ancient Chinese and Greek philosophy, emphasizing their shared “human-centered” (以民為本) values while promoting Belt and Road (一帶一路) cooperation. He claimed Piraeus had been transformed into the “Mediterranean’s largest port” through a bilateral partnership with Chinese state-owned COSCO Shipping (中遠海運), though independent analysis shows it ranks as the largest in the eastern Mediterranean and fourth-largest in Europe.
