Chinese Media Delegation Visits Myanmar and Thailand

On June 15, 2015, departing from Beijing, a five-member Chinese news delegation led by Farmers’ Daily (農民日報) Editor-in-Chief Tang Yuanjie (唐園結) visited Myanmar and Thailand at the invitation of Myanmar’s Ministry of Information and the Thai Journalists Association (泰國記者協會). The delegation, comprising representatives from Farmers’ Daily, Ningxia Daily Media Group (寧夏日報報業集團), Zhejiang Daily Media Group (浙江日報報業集團), Jilin Journalists Association (吉林省記協), and All-China Journalists Association (中國記協), planned to visit government departments, mainstream media outlets, and journalist organizations in both countries. In a readout from ACJA, officials said the mission was to facilitate “media cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative” (一帶一路倡議下的媒體合作), describing the visit as promoting regional media collaboration, though the timing aligned with China’s broader diplomatic campaign to build Southeast Asian support for its Belt and Road Initiative through media partnerships.

People’s Daily Hosts Belt and Road Media Event in Kazakhstan

On June 29, 2024, China’s official People’s Daily (人民日报) newspaper and Kazakh media organizations held a “High-Quality Belt and Road Joint Interview Results Sharing Conference” in Astana, Kazakhstan. The event was attended by Kazakh Parliament Upper House members Galiyaska Sarebayev and Alisher Satvardiyev, with media participants including People’s Daily Deputy Editor-in-Chief Xu Lijing (徐立京) and Zihan Kamzabekulei, the general manager of the Kazakhstan Truth newspaper group. According to official Chinese media coverage, the participants claimed the joint initiative would help media “play a bridge role” and “tell the Silk Road story well” — an echo of Xi Jinping’s policy on the conduct of external propaganda (外宣). Another theme of the event was advancing “high-quality Belt and Road construction” (高质量共建”一带一路”) between China and Kazakhstan.

Xinhua Hosts China-Poland Economic Forum in Warsaw

On June 17, 2025, in Warsaw, Poland, China’s official Xinhua News Agency organized a forum with Li Danhong (李丹红), charge d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Poland, Polish Media Association (波兰媒体协会) President Marek Traczyk, and former Polish Deputy Prime Minister Janusz Piechocinski attending at Lukaszewski University. Xinhua claimed in official coverage that the event would “enhance economic cooperation and mutual understanding” between the countries, with Li presenting China’s commitment to “building an open global economy” and “sharing the dividends of its modernization,” while Traczyk, using terms clearly echoing the official discourse of the CCP, described it as enabling “mutually beneficial cooperation” and contributing to “world peace, development, and shared prosperity.” The forum positions itself as promoting bilateral exchanges through China’s visa-free policy, but the emphasis on China’s development model presentation and standard diplomatic language about “shared prosperity” (共同富裕) suggests soft power objectives rather than independent economic dialogue.

China News Delegation Visits Papua New Guinea

In late April 2018, a five-member Chinese news delegation organized by the All-China Journalists Association (中華全國新聞工作者協會) conducted the first-ever visit by Chinese media representatives to Papua New Guinea (巴布亞新幾內亞), led by Wang Dongmei (王冬梅), secretary of the association’s secretariat. The delegation included members from China Media Group (中央廣播電視總台), Shanghai Broadcasting Network (上海廣播電視台), and Communication University of China (中國傳媒大學). The visit aimed to prepare for coverage of the upcoming APEC summit scheduled for November 2018 in Port Moresby and to establish media cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative framework. The delegation met with local mainstream media, including The Post-Courier (信使郵報) and The National (國民報), as well as the National Broadcasting Corporation (國家廣播公司). Papua New Guinea officials described their preparations for the summit, with “the government providing 800 million kina (approximately 1.6 billion yuan)” for the event, according to local organizers. However, this figure appears questionable when compared to other reported summit costs of approximately $300 million USD. Local media representatives expressed interest in collaborating with Chinese counterparts and covering China-related stories in Papua New Guinea.

Visit by People’s Daily Editor to Thai Business Association

In September 2014, Shan Chengbiao (單成彪), deputy editor-in-chief of People’s Daily Online, visited the Thai Chinese New Generation Business Association (泰國華人青年商會) in Bangkok along with several staff members including the People’s Daily Thailand bureau chief Shi Xiaohui (施曉慧). They were received by Li Guixiong (李桂雄), who served as president of the association. Li described People’s Daily and People’s Daily Online as “China’s most important and most influential media” and praised them for “thoroughly taking up their role as mouthpieces of the Party and the people.” The visit was part of broader media engagement efforts by People’s Daily, which serves as the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party, to strengthen ties with overseas Chinese business organizations in Thailand.

Delegation from People’s Daily Visits Algeria’s El Moudjahid

A delegation from People’s Daily (人民日報), the Chinese state newspaper, visited the Algerian daily El Moudjahid in June 2024, where staff from both papers discussed historical China-Algeria ties, noting China’s early recognition of Algeria’s provisional government in December 1958. El Moudjahid CEO Brahim Takheroubte discussed potential collaboration with the Chinese delegation, which included eight senior journalists. Founded in 1948, the People’s Daily is the official flagship newspaper of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), operating directly under the CCP Central Committee. The paper maintains an Algiers bureau that opened approximately nine months before the June 2024 visit. People’s Daily‘s editorials are widely viewed as reflecting official Chinese government positions.

Xinhua President Meets Mexican News Agency Head

Cai Mingzhao (蔡名照), President of Xinhua News Agency, met with Alejandro Ramos Esquivel, Director General of Mexico’s state news agency Notimex, in Beijing on September 22, 2015. During the meeting, Cai stated that despite geographical distance, China and Mexico share “long-standing friendship” (源远流长). Emphasizing media as a tool of bilateral exchange, Cai described news media as bearing “an important mission in promoting friendly exchanges between the two countries” (增进两国之间友好交往的重要使命). Cai stated that Xinhua prioritizes reporting on Mexico and Latin America, and expressed desire to strengthen cooperation with Notimex across various fields, building on what he described as “over 30 years of close collaboration” (30多年密切合作). Ramos said Xinhua’s work in new media left a “deep impression” (留下深刻印象) and stated his agency “wishes to further strengthen cooperation” (愿进一步加强合作) in promoting national images and addressing technological challenges.

Agence Kampuchea Presse and Xinhua Renew News Exchange Cooperation

On June 2, 2024, Cambodia’s Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP) and China’s Xinhua News Agency (新華社) agreed to deepen their existing cooperation, with Xinhua pledging technical assistance to build AKP’s capacity. The bilateral meeting between AKP Director General Sokmom Nimul and visiting Xinhua Editor-in-Chief Lyu Yansong (吕岩松) emphasized the importance of strengthening media cooperation between the two countries. During the discussions, the AKP director general sought Xinhua’s assistance in building AKP’s capacity through experience sharing and a training programme, describing Xinhua’s support as “a model of good friendship between Cambodia and China,” according to the Khmer Times. In response, Lyu Yansong stated his agency wanted to “expand cooperation between Xinhua and AKP to practical news cooperation to build trust between the Chinese and Cambodian people,” as reported by the publication. This commitment follows the renewal of their Agreement on News Exchange Cooperation in February 2023, reflecting the broader strengthening of Cambodia-China relations across multiple sectors.
