Canada’s Last Chinese Daily Closes
Ming Pao Canada announced last week that it will cease publication, marking the end of an era for Chinese-language journalism in Canada.

Canadian Chinese News Agency (加拿大中華新聞社), which operates the Chinese-language portal ChinaNews.org as well as the Canadian portal Canadian Chinese Information Online (加拿大华人资讯网), or chinanews.ca, was founded in Hong Kong in 2010 by Chang Jianguo (常建國), maintaining editorial centers in North America, Central Asia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The agency’s own “About Us” page states it was founded by Chang Jianguo (常建國), described there as honorary chairman of the Xi’an Municipal Overseas Chinese Federation (西安市僑聯), a body that operates within China’s United Front Work Department system, which coordinates outreach to overseas Chinese communities on the CCP’s behalf. The outlet describes its mission as “showcasing China’s image and spreading China’s voice,” and states that it aims to “tell China’s story well” and serve as a bridge of trust between mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, overseas Chinese communities, and the international community. According to the agency’s own biography of Chang, which instead identifies him as the federation’s deputy chairman, he also chairs China Media Group (中華傳媒集團) and serves as executive editor-in-chief of the Canada channel of the People’s Daily Overseas Edition’s website (人民日報海外網). The same page shows Chang meeting Chinese State Council Vice Premier Liu Guozhong (劉國中) and Central Propaganda Department deputy head Hu Heping (胡和平), and states that he was received by then-Politburo Standing Committee member Liu Yunshan (劉雲山) at the 2016 Belt and Road Media Cooperation Forum in Beijing and by Politburo member and Central Propaganda Department head Huang Kunming (黃坤明) at the close of the 2018 Overseas Chinese New Media Summit in Hangzhou. In April 2023, the agency signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Henan International Communication Center, one of 16 such agreements the Henan center signed with overseas Chinese-language outlets that month.The site chinanews.ca continues to maintain a Hong Kong contact number as of August 2026.
