Chinese Benevolent Society Peru

The Chinese Benevolent Society (秘魯中華通惠總局) is Peru’s oldest and most influential Chinese community organization and the national umbrella body for Chinese and Chinese-Peruvian associations across the country. It is registered in Spanish as the Sociedad Central de Beneficencia China Ton Huy Chong Koc, a name that formerly lacked the romanized Chinese suffix. It was founded in 1886 by Zheng Zaoru (鄭藻如), the Qing dynasty’s envoy to Peru, and today oversees a network of affiliated associations in Lima and the provinces. The society maintains close ties with the PRC Embassy. In December 2022, Ambassador Song Yang (宋揚) briefed its leaders on the “spirit” of the CCP’s 20th Party Congress and urged them to “support the embassy’s work” (支持使館工作). Embassy diplomats attended the installation of its 2026–2028 board. In February 2025, the society co-organized a Spring Festival gala at Peru’s National Theater with the embassy and the China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese (中華全國歸國華僑聯合會). In August 2025, it hosted a war commemoration co-organized by the Peru Council for the Promotion of the Peaceful Reunification of China (秘魯中國和平統一促進會), a body tied to the CCP’s United Front system. According to RTHK, the society has also been invited to take part in Beijing’s foreign aid program, distributing emergency funds to Chinese citizens in Peru. It is one of three members of the Patronato that manages Lima’s Chinese-funded Centro de la Amistad Peruano China (Peruvian-Chinese Friendship Center).
