Student Magazine Folds After 74 Years
A storied student magazine at a Hong Kong university has closed, the latest sign of shrinking space for independent campus journalism and political expression.
Hong Kong Security Bureau
The Security Bureau (保安局) is a policy bureau of the Hong Kong government responsible for law and order, immigration and customs control, offender and drug rehabilitation, and emergency fire and rescue services. It oversees Hong Kong’s disciplined forces (meaning “uniformed”), including the Hong Kong Police Force, the Correctional Services Department, and the Immigration Department, according to the bureau’s own description of its mandate. Since the 2020 imposition of the Hong Kong National Security Law by China’s National People’s Congress Standing Committee, the bureau has taken a central role in implementing and publicizing national security enforcement, including gazetting amendments to the law’s implementing rules and producing its own media content, such as the 2026 television series NS Files: Decoded. The bureau is headed by the Secretary for Security, a principal official appointed by the Chief Executive.
