Based in Rome, the National Council of the Order of Journalists (Ordine dei Giornalisti Consiglio Nazionale) is Italy’s national governing body for journalist licensing responsible also for the mandatory training of journalists, freelancers, and other media workers. The order was founded after the announcement of Law No. 69 (Legge n. 69/1963), or the “1963 Law on the Organization of the Journalistic Profession,” which provided for the regulation of journalistic work and the function of the national council. According to the law, the national council is responsible for maintaining the “Albo dei Giornalisti,” a register of licensed journalists in the country. The national council consists of 20 regional councils. On its website, the national council shares news updates on city events and opportunities, such as journalism awards.
