National Federation of Journalists Brazil

Founded on September 20, 1946, the National Federation of Journalists (巴西全國記者聯合會), or FENAJ, is Brazil’s national body of regional journalist trade unions, headquartered in Brasília. FENAJ does not enroll individual journalists directly. Its members are the state and municipal journalist unions, which numbered 31 in 2023, according to a FENAJ letter from that year. FENAJ defends the labor rights of journalists and is elected by direct vote of journalists nationwide. It is the Brazilian affiliate of the International Federation of Journalists, the world’s largest federation of journalists’ unions. FENAJ has also developed ties with the All-China Journalists Association (中華全國新聞工作者協會), or ACJA, a Chinese Communist Party-led professional association that serves a key role in implementing press control policies. In 2018, the two organizations signed an agreement in Brasília to exchange news about the Belt and Road Initiative and to jointly organize seminars, training, interviews and awards. In July 2025, FENAJ received an ACJA certificate designating it an “International Home of Journalists” (國際記者之家). The designation commits it to hosting foreign journalists from the ACJA-led Belt and Road Journalists Network (一帶一路記者組織合作平台) who visit Brazil.
