Roma 9 Sino-Italian Economic and Cultural Exchange Center

The Roma 9 Sino-Italian Economic and Cultural Exchange Center (Roma 9 Centro di Scambi Economici e Culturali Sino-Italiani) is a Rome organization and event venue launched in December 2018 by Cina in Italia, a bilingual Italian-Chinese monthly and publishing house founded in 2001. It is housed in the magazine’s San Lorenzo offices on Piazza dei Campani and takes its name from the street number. Both are led by Hu Lanbo (胡蘭波), a Chinese-born publisher. At the launch, she described Roma 9 as a center for promoting understanding between the two cultures. PRC Embassy counselors were listed as speakers at the opening. The Cina in Italia website was published in 2019 by the company Cina in Italia Srls. It now operates under the VAT number of Roma 9, an entity registered separately with the Rome Chamber of Commerce. In 2023, Decode39 reported that Cina in Italia is the Italian edition of China Newsweek (中國新聞週刊), which is published by the state-run China News Service (中國新聞社). Citing Intelligence Online, it also reported that Chinese Ambassador Jia Guide (賈桂德) relied on Roma 9 to host events he could not stage at the embassy. That September, the state-run Global Times (環球時報) reported that Hu, as Roma 9’s chairperson, managed conference affairs for a China-Europe Seminar on Human Rights in Rome. The seminar was co-hosted by the state-backed China Society for Human Rights Studies (中國人權研究會) and Sapienza University of Rome’s law faculty, and Jia attended. On September 1, 2024, Roma 9 signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Western China International Communication Organization (西部國際傳播中心), a Chongqing body for state-led external propaganda. Roma 9 thereby became the first overseas liaison office of WCICO’s Bridging News (陸海財經) platform.
