China’s Media Toll on Taiwanese Democracy
Official state media warn a popular Taiwanese television host to avoid observing local elections — or risk losing PRC market access.

Bridging News (陸海財經) is an English-language financial news platform run by the Western China International Communication Organization (西部國際傳播中心), or WCICO. WCICO is the Chongqing body for state-led external propaganda and is operated by the Chongqing Daily News Group (重慶日報報業集團). Alongside iChongqing, Bridging News is one of WCICO’s core brands for what China’s leadership calls “external propaganda” (外宣). It runs a website, a mobile app, and accounts on Facebook and YouTube. By August 2023, Chongqing officials described the platform as an overseas English-language app providing financial news on the Belt and Road Initiative (一帶一路) and the New International Land-Sea Trade Corridor (西部陸海新通道). The corridor is a Chongqing-centered freight route linking western China to Southeast Asian ports under the Belt and Road framework. WCICO’s iChongqing platform has described it as an outlet serving Chinese industries expanding overseas. In November 2024, WCICO claimed 245,000 overseas downloads for the app and announced plans to make it a “mobile portal” for western China’s opening. WCICO has since opened Bridging News liaison offices with local partners in Rome, Singapore, and three other cities. In Lima, the partner is Clasic Media China International SAC. In Brazil, it is the Brazilian Press Association (Associação Brasileira de Imprensa). In Kuala Lumpur, it is the Malaysian think tank CASR.
