China’s Media Toll on Taiwanese Democracy
Official state media warn a popular Taiwanese television host to avoid observing local elections — or risk losing PRC market access.

Founded in January 1997, the China Internet Information Center (中國互聯網新聞中心), or CIIC, operates the china.com.cn website (中國網). According to its introduction page, the site aims to promote “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era” (習近平新時代中國特色社會主義思想), Xi’s signature political ideology, written into the Party constitution at the 19th National Congress in 2017. The same page claims CIIC publishes China-related information in 10 languages, with users in more than 200 countries. A 2021 statement said CIIC is run by the China International Communication Group (CICG) under the guidance of the State Council Information Office. CIIC also operates websites for official bodies, including “China Diplomacy in the New Era” (習近平外交思想和新時代中國外交) and the SCIO’s English website.
