South and Southeast Asian Media Network

The South and Southeast Asian Media Network (南亚东南亚媒体联盟), or SSAMN, is a Chinese government-led media cooperation alliance established on January 31, 2024, in Beijing through joint leadership of China Daily Asia Pacific and the Yunnan International Communication Center for South and Southeast Asia (云南省南亚东南亚区域国际传播中心) — one of scores of international communication centers (ICCs) founded in China since 2018 as part of a national push to incorporate provinces and cities into the CCP’s external propaganda strategy. According to state media reports, the network has attracted over 40 overseas and 50 domestic media organizations, reporters’ associations, and news agencies from countries in or related to South and Southeast Asia. SSAMN says that it facilitates cooperation through resource sharing, technological innovation, and people-to-people exchanges, with activities including annual meetings in Kunming, joint project initiatives, and collaborative content production leveraging Yunnan Province’s strategic position as a gateway to South and Southeast Asia.

Transsion Holdings

Transsion Holdings (傳音控股), founded in August 2013 in Shenzhen by George Zhu (竺兆江), is a consumer electronics manufacturer specializing in smartphones and mobile devices for emerging markets. The company is one of Africa’s dominant smartphone manufacturers, earning Zhu the moniker “Africa’s Mobile King” (非洲手機之王). The company went public on Shanghai’s STAR Market (an exchange for sci-tech companies) in September 2019, raising 400 million US dollars. Together, Transsion’s TECNO, Infinix, and Itel mobile brands control 51 percent of Africa’s smartphone market. According to analysts, it has performed strongly by offering localized features such as camera algorithms tailored for darker skin tones as well as support for African languages. The company has expanded beyond Africa into Southeast Asia, Latin America, and South Asia. Chinese state media have celebrated Zhu’s success, with such outlets as the Global Times (环球时报), affiliated with the Party’s official People’s Daily, praising him for his role in China-Africa relations.

Regulatory Authority for Broadcasting and Telecommunications

The Regulatory Authority for Broadcasting and Telecommunications (RTR), or Rundfunk und Telekom Regulierungs-GmbH, is the regulatory body overseeing broadcasting and telecommunications in Austria. Established in April 2001 following telecommunications legislation, RTR operates under Austrian federal law to ensure compliance with media regulations, allocate broadcasting frequencies, and regulate electronic communications markets.

All About Macau Media

All About Macau, also known as AAMacau, is a Macau-based independent media outlet that began in August 2010 as a weekly feature in Sonpou News (訊報). The publication formally established itself as an independent entity in 2012, launching its website AAMacau.com, followed by its first print monthly magazine in May 2013. The outlet covers current news, social issues, cultural arts, interviews and environmental topics through investigative reporting on controversial social issues. In 2023, amid what Reporters Without Borders described as increased pressure on journalists following expanded national security laws, All About Macau transitioned to a subscription and donation-based funding model. The outlet operates digital and print platforms with social media presence, aiming to create a “quality public discourse space” and promote diverse civic engagement in Macau.

Il Sole 24 Ore

Il Sole 24 Ore is Italy’s leading financial newspaper, created on November 9, 1965, through the merger of Il Sole, founded in 1865, and 24 Ore, launched in 1946. The newspaper is owned by Confindustria, Italy’s employers’ federation, and is headquartered in Milan. Il Sole 24 Ore covers business, politics, commercial law, and financial markets, and operates as part of the broader 24 ORE Group. In 2019, Italy’s securities regulator Consob fined the newspaper’s management 1.05 million euros for inflating digital circulation figures.

Lao Future Media Co Ltd

Lao Future Media Co. was founded in Vientiane in 2012. The company offers Lao news to Chinese and Lao business clients via paper publications and internet platforms. It is dedicated to developing a media information platform for Chinese and Chinese businessmen in Laos. The company utilizes various online platforms, such as the Lao Information Network official WeChat account, official Facebook, and Weibo accounts. The company claims it has become “Laos’ most influential Chinese-language media” and partners with Lao state television, Lao Economic Daily (老撾經濟日報), Vientiane Times (萬象時報), and Chinese state media including People’s Daily Online and China News Service. On November 9, 2023, Lao-China Enterprise Services Company acquired Laos Info Network from Laos Future Media Company, with Samanoh Bensena as board chairman, Savang Bensena as general manager, and Long Pan (龍攀) as Laos Future Media’s chairman attending the signing ceremony. Zhou Zeyu (周澤宇) was nominated as the network’s general manager.

Associated Press

The Associated Press (AP) is a major international news agency, providing news coverage, photographs, and video to media outlets worldwide. It was founded in May 1846, when six New York newspapers pooled resources to fund a relay of horses and riders to deliver news from the Mexican-American War. AP operates as an independent, no-profit news cooperative. Headquartered in New York, the organization serves member newspapers and broadcasters across the United States and maintains bureaus in nearly 100 countries. The cooperative has won 59 Pulitzer Prizes for journalistic excellence.

Nanyang Siang Pau

Nanyang Siang Pau (南洋商報) is a Malaysian Chinese-language daily newspaper founded on September 6, 1923, in Singapore by philanthropist Tan Kah Kee (陳嘉庚). The newspaper split into separate Malaysian and Singaporean editions in 1965 following Singapore’s independence, with the Singapore edition later merging into Lianhe Zaobao in 1983. The newspaper targets professionals, managers, and business readers, focusing on financial information and international news. It publishes both print and digital editions, having launched its electronic newspaper in 2013 and the eNanyang.my mobile portal in 2015.

Arab League

The Arab League, formally known as the League of Arab States, is a regional organization founded in March 1945 with seven founding members: Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Transjordan, and Yemen. Today, it comprises 22 member states across North Africa and the Middle East, headquartered in Cairo. According to its charter, the founding members agreed to seek “close cooperation” on matters of economics, communication, culture, nationality, social welfare, and health. The League’s goals are to strengthen relations between member states, coordinate collaboration, and safeguard their independence and sovereignty. Each member has one vote in the Council, with decisions binding only for states that voted for them. Despite ambitious goals, the League has been criticized for disunity and poor governance, with critics describing it as a “glorified debating society.” The organization has no mechanism to compel members’ compliance with resolutions.
