Beijing Review

Beijing Review (北京週報) is an English-language weekly news magazine launched in Beijing in March 1958 as Peking Review. It is published by the China International Communication Group (中國外文出版發行事業局), or CICG, which official sources describe as an “international communication institution” responsible for the “external promotion tasks of the Party and state” (承擔黨和國家對外宣介任務). CICG is an institution directly under the CCP Central Committee. Under a 2021 restructuring of CICG, the magazine’s publisher also became the group’s Americas Communication Center (中國外文局美洲傳播中心). Alongside the print edition, Beijing Review runs online editions in several languages, including the German-language [Beijing Rundschau](http://german.beijingreview.com.cn/International/mindex2.html). In October 2020, the US State Department designated the US operations of Beijing Review and five other Chinese outlets as “foreign missions.” A [department spokesperson said](https://www.upi.com/TopNews/US/2020/10/22/US-designates-6-more-Chinese-media-firms-as-foreign-missions/9871603352352/) the designation recognized the outlets as “PRC-controlled propaganda outlets.” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian (趙立堅) responded that the move revealed “the hypocrisy of the United States’ self-proclaimed ‘freedom of the press.’”
