Chinese Embassy in Romania Publishes Special Edition on Poverty Reduction on Curierul National

On May 20, 2021, the Chinese Embassy in Romania published a four-page special edition on the efforts of the Chinese Communist Party to reduce poverty in China, in cooperation with the daily Romanian-language newspaper Curierul Național. The edition theme was based on the 2021 White Paper “China’s Practices in Poverty Reduction and Human Rights” (人類減貧的中國實踐), which promoted the narrative of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) on its national campaign to eradicate poverty, which was one of the leadership’s core propaganda narratives that year. As part of this special edition, the Chinese ambassador to Romania also published an article where he said that the CCP’s eradication of extreme poverty in China was achieved 10 years ahead of the schedule outlined in the UN 2030 Agenda for poverty eradication. However, independent data from the World Bank show that China’s own poverty line was just above the world’s poorest threshold. But in 2021, roughly 240 million people in China were still living below the poverty line for middle-income countries as defined by the World Bank.
