The Play China Didn’t Want Strasbourg to See
When China’s consulate pressured a French theater to cancel the Taiwanese production “This Is Not an Embassy,” it proved the play’s point more vividly than any performance could.

On November 28, 2025, Gonggong News Agency, a privately operating news service with connections to Hong Kong and Guangdong province and apparently close affiliations with the government of Uganda, signed a cooperation agreement in Hong Kong with Radio Mandarin d’Europe (欧洲华语广播电台), a Paris-based Mandarin language broadcaster. Both media agreed to cooperate in areas such as content sharing and joint talent development. During the signing ceremony, Gong Guolin (龚国林), the executive deputy director of Gonggong News Agency, said the media’s mission is to facilitate global communication. Radio Mandarin d’Europe Director Xie Nailong (谢乃龙), who is also the founder of the Rome Chinese Cultural Center Association (罗马中国文化中心), or Associazione Centro Cultura Cinese di Roma, a center promoting Chinese culture in Italy, also emphasized the broadcaster’s commitment to “tell China’s story well” (讲好中国故事), a direct echo of the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) policy under Xi Jinping for external propaganda.
