Polish Media Delegation Visits Beijing Communication University

On July 19, 2023, at Communication University of China (中国传媒大学) in Beijing, Polish Media Association (波兰媒体协会) Chairman Marek Traczyk met with university Vice President Yang Yi and officials from the China Journalists Association (中国记协), accompanied by CJA International Department Director Chen Tao (陈涛). The delegation claimed the visit would strengthen cooperation in “talent cultivation, industry exchange, and cultural innovation” under the Belt and Road Initiative (一带一路), with Yang noting the university’s commitment to “cross-civilizational exchange” (文明交流互鉴) and Traczyk expressing hopes for “deeper cooperation in culture, communication, and education.” Both sides referenced the June 2023 “China-Poland Journalists’ Home” (中波记者之家) memorandum and emphasized Poland’s participation in the Belt and Road “circle of friends,” using terminology about building a “community with shared future for mankind” (人类命运共同体) and promoting “people-to-people connectivity” (民心相通) — standard PRC diplomatic language suggesting the academic exchange serves broader soft power objectives rather than independent journalism education.

Xinhua Signs Deal with SPH Media Trust

On July 8, 2025, Xinhua President Fu Hua (傅華) met with Singapore Press Holdings Media’s (SPH Media) CEO Chan Yeng Ying Jie (陳延吉) in Beijing, where both leaders committed to “jointly telling stories of their countries’ development and people-to-people friendship” while enhancing cooperation in news reporting, artificial intelligence, and other technological fields. This meeting was the centerpiece of a four-day delegation visit (July 7-10) led by Chan Yeng Kit, which included meetings with China’s major media organizations, including China Media Group (中央廣播電視總台), People’s Daily (人民日報), and Tsinghua University’s journalism school, to discuss shared challenges like disinformation and digital transformation.

SPH Media Trust

SPH Media Trust (SMT), short for Singapore Press Holdings Media Trust, is a Singapore public company limited by guarantee in the media sector, formed through the spin off in July 2021 of Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) — the conglomerate formed in 1984 and running scores of newspapers and other media, including major dailies such as The Straits Times and Lianhe Zaobao. In February 2022, the government pledged nearly S$1 billion over a five-year period to support the digital modernization efforts of the group, which today is the parent entity of SPH Media Holdings Pte Ltd and SPH Media Limited, the latter being the company directly operating scores of media outlets in Singapore.

CMG and RAI Sign Three-Year Collaboration Deal

Italy’s state broadcaster RAI and the China Media Group signed a three-year memorandum of understanding on March 22, 2019, during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Rome, establishing a framework for cultural and media cooperation between the two nations. The agreement, finalized at RAI’s headquarters on Viale Mazzini, brings together the Italian public broadcaster and China’s state media conglomerate to facilitate exchanges in radio, television, cinema and training programs, with RAI CEO Fabrizio Salini emphasizing the accord’s role in promoting cultural values between Italy and China. CMG Director General Shen Haixiong (慎海雄) described both countries as “cultural superpowers,” according to a readout from the Italian broadcaster, while RAI President Marcello Foa highlighted the broadcaster’s mission to open Italy to the world through cultural exchange, building on previous collaborations that included Chinese coverage of the Sanremo Festival.

Tsinghua University’s School of Journalism and Communication

The School of Journalism and Communication at Tsinghua University (清華大學新聞與傳播學院) was officially established on April 21, 2002, evolving from earlier programs that traced back to 1985 when an editorial studies direction was established within the Chinese Literature Department. The Department of Communication was subsequently formed in October 1998 under the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, launching a Master’s program in communication in September 2000 and a Bachelor’s program in journalism in September 2001. Upon its establishment in 2002, the school was already recognized as among the top five journalism schools in China alongside more established institutions such as Renmin University, Fudan University, and the Communication University of China. Fan Jingyi (范敬宜), former editor-in-chief of People’s Daily, was appointed as the school’s founding dean. As part of Tsinghua University, the school operates under the supervision of China’s Ministry of Education, which provides both affiliation and funding to the institution.

Xinhua Deepens Coooperation with Kyodo News

On February 17, 2025, Fu Hua (傅華), the president of China’s official Xinhua News Agency, met with his counterpart at the non-profit cooperative news agency Kyodo News, Mizutani Toru, in Tokyo, both organizations agreeing to “deepen exchange and cooperation.” Fu Hua stated that as “important media institutions of both countries,” Xinhua and Kyodo serve as “witnesses and participants in the development of bilateral relations.” This was a typical portrayal of media partnerships not as professional media activities by rather diplomatic events. The partners committed to “consolidating existing cooperative results,” expanding collaboration in new media and technology applications, and working together under the World Media Summit (WMS) framework — referring to an ostensible global media grouping entirely controlled by Xinhua — to “promote mutual understanding between Chinese and Japanese people” and “enhance mutual trust” to help bilateral relations “move forward steadily and sustainably.”

South Korea’s JoongAng Ilbo Signs MOU with Wuxi Daily

The JoongAng Ilbo (중앙일보) of South Korea and Wuxi Daily (无锡日报), the official publication of the CCP Committee in Wuxi, Jiangsu province, signed a strategic cooperation memorandum on April 23, 2024, during a Wuxi economic and cultural delegation visit to Korea. The partnership leverages both media platforms to promote bilateral economic, cultural, and tourism resources between the two regions. JoongAng Group, Korea’s comprehensive content media conglomerate, operates extensive global news networks and maintains relationships with state-level Chinese media including Xinhua News Agency and China Daily. The collaboration established regular communication mechanisms for joint interviews and friendship-building activities, capitalizing on Wuxi’s substantial Korean business presence — nearly 800 Korean enterprises and Korea representing Wuxi’s largest source of sister-city relationships — to enhance mutual understanding and expand Wuxi’s profile in Korean markets.
