Radio and Television of Timor Leste

Rádio e Televisão de Timor-Leste (RTTL) is Timor-Leste’s state-owned public broadcaster, running national radio and television in Tetum, Portuguese, and Indonesian. The broadcaster was established in 1999 as Radio UNAMET, an information service run by the United Nations Mission in East Timor, and transformed into a public broadcasting service in 2002 after the country became independent, according to its website. In 2008, the country passed Decree-Law No. 42/2008, approving RTTL as a public enterprise earning its own revenues. The Decree-Law was amended in 2024 to enable RTTL to have greater flexibility to manage content distribution, allowing it to broadcast its channels locally and internationally to receive additional income. In 2026, Madalena Pereira Carlos, a director of RTTL, attended the China-ASEAN Urban Media Roundtable, an event dedicated to deepening media collaboration between China and Southeast Asian nations.
