Thai Rath

Thai Rath, Thailand’s largest-circulation newspaper, was founded on December 25, 1962, by Kampol Wacharapol (กำพล วัชรพล), though its origins trace to his earlier publications. Wacharapol first launched the weekly Khaw Phaph (Photo News) on January 9, 1950, which became a daily in 1952 before being shut down by the military government in 1958. He then operated Siang Ang Thong from May 1959 until launching Thai Rath proper. The newspaper claims circulation exceeding one million copies daily and maintains its position as Thailand’s best-selling Thai-language publication with a reported 46% share of online news consumption. UNESCO recognized Kampol Wacharapol in 2017 as “a person of global significance in media and education.” The company expanded into digital media with thairath.co.th and launched Thai Rath TV in 2014. The Wacharapol family continues to control the media empire through Wacharapol Co. Ltd, with operations spanning print, digital, television, and related businesses including cosmetics and logistics ventures launched in 2021.

Thansettakij

Thansettakij is a leading Thai economic newspaper that operates as a bi-weekly publication in traditional bulletin journal format, covering business news, politics, and economic analysis for diverse demographics across Thailand. The publication is part of Nation Multimedia Group (NMG), which confirmed that Thansettakij joined their media portfolio alongside other major Thai publications including Nation Thailand, Kom Chad Luek, and Krungthep Turakij. According to NMG’s 2019 business strategy announcement, Thansettakij was identified as a “soon-to-join family member” that would provide “in-depth data and analysis in their respective fields to specific groups of readers” as part of the group’s offline data strategy. The newspaper maintains both print and digital operations, with its website serving as what industry analysts describe as having “a very large online following.” Thansettakij has established itself as a credible source for Thai political and economic reporting, frequently cited by international news agencies including Bloomberg for its coverage of Thai government developments and business affairs. The publication focuses on comprehensive coverage including business editorial sections, social issues, HR topics, and international politics.

RTV

RTV is a Bengali-language satellite and cable television channel that launched on 26 December 2005 and has become one of Bangladesh’s most popular television channels. Originally founded by Mohammad Mosaddak Ali Falu, a former Bangladesh Nationalist Party parliamentarian, the channel commenced test broadcasts on 1 December 2005 and officially began transmissions on 26 December that year. When Falu was jailed in 2007, RTV changed hands and went over to Bengal Group, with multiple sources noting that “a state intelligence agency was involved in this share transfer”. The channel is now owned by Bengal Media Corporation, part of the Bengal Group of Industries controlled by Awami League member of parliament Morshed Alam (মোর্শেদ আলম) and his family. RTV is headquartered in the BSEC Building in Kawran Bazar, Dhaka and primarily airs entertainment and news programming. The channel has expanded internationally, and has launched its own video-on-demand service called RTV Plus on 24 May 2020.

The Independent

The Independent was an English-language daily newspaper published in Dhaka, Bangladesh, that launched on March 26, 1995, by Beximco Group, making it the first four-color, 16-page daily in the country and the first to use imported newsprint. The newspaper was owned by Bangladesh Export Import Company Limited, commonly known as Beximco Group, which was founded in the 1970s by brothers Ahmed Sohail Fasihur Rahman and Salman Fazlur Rahman. The Independent introduced Bangladesh’s first 32-page weekend magazine and underwent a rebranding in October 2010 with an enhanced focus on fast and authentic news coverage. The newspaper ceased printed publication in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ceased all operations in 2022.

Daily Naya Diganta

The Daily Naya Diganta, meaning “Daily New Horizons,” is a Bengali daily newspaper published in Bangladesh since 2004. Part of Diganta Media Corporation, the publication was owned by Mir Quasem Ali, a prominent Jamaat-e-Islami politician who was executed in September 2016 for war crimes committed during Bangladesh’s 1971 independence war. Alamgir Mohiuddin serves as editor of the newspaper, which operates alongside sister television channel Diganta TV, launched in August 2008. The publication faced legal challenges when Bangladesh’s Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu accused the newspaper of carrying out “propaganda” against the International Crimes Tribunal, and a Daily Naya Diganta reporter was cautioned for misrepresenting testimony in January 2012.

ATN

ATN Bangla is a Bangladeshi Bengali-language satellite television channel that launched on 15 July 1997, making it Bangladesh’s first privately-owned television channel and the first to broadcast via satellite. Founded by Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman, the channel is owned by Multimedia Production Company and broadcasts from Dhaka’s Kawran Bazar neighborhood. ATN Bangla became the first Bengali-language television channel in the world to broadcast worldwide. The channel gained international recognition when it won the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting Award at the 32nd International Emmy Awards on 22 November 2004 for its documentary “Amrao Pari” (We Too Can), which was shot and directed by eighteen Bangladeshi teenagers and focused on the story of Abul Khaer, a 9-year-old boy who stopped a passenger train from approaching a disjointed rail track.

Politika

Politika is Serbia’s oldest and most influential daily newspaper, first published on January 25, 1904, in Belgrade by founder and editor Vladislav Ribnikar. The inaugural issue was printed in 2,450 copies across four pages, priced at five para. Throughout its history, Politika has twice ceased publication during wartime: from 1914-1919 during World War I and from April 1941 to October 1944 during World War II. The newspaper also suspended operations in summer 1992 due to a journalists’ strike protesting government attempts to convert it into a state enterprise. Today, Politika maintains its position as one of Serbia’s most respected newspapers, adhering to high professional journalistic standards while fostering dialogue and freedom of expression. The publication has collaborated with notable literary figures including Nobel laureate Ivo Andrić and Winston Churchill.

Canal 2 Television

Canal 2 International is Cameroon’s first private television channel, initially launched in 2001 and rebranded under its current name in 2004. Based in Douala’s Akwa district, the network is owned by Emmanuel Chatue’s TV+ Group. Initially broadcasting primarily music content until its temporary closure in 2003, Canal 2 evolved into a general-interest station focused on continuous news coverage, entertainment, and sports, broadcasting in both French and English. The channel gained prominence through its production of situation comedies and image-based news broadcasts, and has expanded its programming to include numerous drama series such as “Tourbillon de Passions,” “El Diablo,” and “Avenida Brasil.” In 2020, Canal 2 made history by hosting the first live televised press conference for a Cameroonian artist, when Josco L’inquiéteur’s single “Les Histoires de Sangmelima” was unveiled. The channel is owned by telecommunications engineer Emmanuel Chatue, who started as a cable distributor in Douala before launching his television venture.

The Financial Express

The Financial Express is an English-language daily newspaper established in 1993 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and describes itself as the “First Financial Daily in Bangladesh.” Owned by International Publications Limited, the publication was Bangladesh’s second-largest English-language newspaper as of 2021, focusing primarily on business and economic issues including international economic news. Founding editor AHM Moazzem Hossain, a Bangladeshi journalist, led the publication until his death in 2018, with the newspaper experiencing significant losses during the COVID-19 pandemic when news editor Abdullah M Hasan and executive editor Shahiduzzaman Khan both died from the virus in 2020 and 2021 respectively. The publication has received recognition through the Japan-based Developing Asia Journalism Awards.
