Overseas Chinese Media Gather in Zhejiang Province for Propaganda Event

On May 19–20, 2026, 30 overseas Chinese-language media outlets from 17 countries and regions gathered in Lin’an, a suburban district of the city of Hangzhou in China’s coastal Zhejiang Province, for an event focused on promoting the culture of the ancient Wu-Yue kingdom — a state that ruled parts of present-day Zhejiang and Jiangsu during the Five Dynasties period (907–960 CE) — to international audiences. Eight overseas Chinese media representatives were appointed as “Wu-Yue Culture Overseas Promotion Officers” at the gathering. Representatives from four named outlets discussed strategies for reaching foreign audiences through short-form drama, online games, and AI-generated content: Yu Tianzhu (于天竹), editor-in-chief of American-Chinese.com (美國華人網); Tao Xinyi (陶辛夷), honorary president of Spain-based Grupo Ouhua Medios de Comunicacion S.L. (歐華傳媒集團), or Ouhua Media Group; Zhan Jinlong (詹金龍), president of Australia’s Vision Australia (財視澳洲); and Zhang Weijia (章維佳), president of Indonesia’s Dr. Metastar (鹿見寰宇), a site launched in 2024 that seems to have deep partnerships with Chinese state media, including the CCP’s official People’s Daily. Several framed their mission in terms closely echoing the Chinese Communist Party’s directive to “tell China’s story well” (講好中國故事), a term denoting domestic and international message control around positive portrayals of China and its policies and actions. Tao called for foreign journalists and social media influencers to visit Lin’an as more credible messengers to overseas audiences. The remaining 26 outlets were unnamed in Chinese coverage of the event, which was reported by Ouzhou Qiaobao (歐洲僑報), also known as “Euro Chinese Daily” and “Overseas Chinese Newspaper in Europe,” a Chinese-language newspaper and website based in Romania — where it is locally known as “Ziarul Chinezii In Lume.”

Overseas Chinese-Language Media Tour Visits Jiangxi Province

On May 15, 2026, senior executives from more than 40 overseas Chinese-language media organizations — including from Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Taiwan — attended the 2026 Overseas Chinese-Language Media Jiangxi Tour (2026海外華文媒體江西行), a state-organized reporting tour in Jiangxi’s capital city of Nanchang. Participants visited the Tengwang Pavilion (滕王閣) scenic area, where they attended a performance of “Dreaming of the Tengwang Pavilion,” a large-scale outdoor immersive production that first opened in January 2021. Organizers said the activity aimed to leverage the “bridging role” of overseas Chinese-language media to help Jiangxi “enhance its international communication capacity” and bring Jiangxi’s culture and development achievements to “broader domestic and international audiences,” framing diaspora outlets as conduits for provincial and state narratives. Chinese Commercial News (菲律賓商報), which had representatives present on the tour, reported on the event.

Chinese Ambassador to the European Union Gives Interview to Brussels Times

In March 2026, Chinese Ambassador to the European Union Cai Run (蔡潤) gave an interview to the Brussels Times, a Belgian English-language outlet. The interview focused on the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), China’s national development blueprint, and its implications for China-EU relations. Cai claimed that the Plan would “inject stability and certainty into the world” and that China’s trade and investment policies represent genuine openness, citing bilateral trade figures as evidence of a healthy relationship — without acknowledging that EU data shows a 359.9 billion euro in goods trade deficit in 2025. He presented the 2025 lifting of European Parliament exchange restrictions as a diplomatic milestone, also without noting that those restrictions originated from China’s own retaliatory sanctions on MEPs imposed in 2021 in response to EU measures over documented human rights abuses in Xinjiang. Cai also portrayed European businesses and policymakers as broadly welcoming deeper alignment with Beijing, sidestepping an active WTO dispute over EU tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles imposed following findings of unfair state subsidies.

Xinhua President Meets With Reuters Managing Director

In October 2025, Fu Hua (傅華), president of China’s official Xinhua News Agency, met in Beijing with Alphonse Hardel, managing director at Reuters, the London-based international news agency. According to Xinhua’s report, Fu described Reuters as one of the earliest Western news agencies to establish ties with Xinhua, citing a news cooperation agreement first signed between the two in 1957, covering news exchange and photo services. Fu called for continued cooperation “on the basis of mutual respect and shared benefits.” Hardel said that both agencies share concerns about the responsible use of artificial intelligence in news and communications and expressed a desire to continue the partnership.

Jishi Media Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Cátedra China

In April 2025, Jishi Media signed a memorandum of understanding with Cátedra China, a Madrid-based think tank with close ties to the Chinese government. The agreement, signed in Madrid on April 11, commits both parties to producing and distributing media content to “deepen understanding of China in the Spanish-speaking world,” to “develop and promote materials helping Spain understand the realities of 21st-century China,” and to strengthening ties among media professionals, journalists, writers, and filmmakers in both countries — objectives that align closely with Beijing’s stated goals for overseas cultural and media influence. Cátedra China, founded in 2012, describes itself as an analysis and discussion platform whose more than 130 members are experts and scholars with at least a decade of experience working on China-Spain relations.

Jishi Media Signs Cooperation Agreement with the University of Salamanca

On April 23, 2026, during a visit by a University of Salamanca delegation to Jilin Province, China, Jishi Media (吉視傳媒股份有限公司), a state-owned broadcaster in Jilin Province, signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the University of Salamanca. The signing took place between You Zhiqiang (由志強), the chairman of Jishi, and the University of Salamanca’s computer science professor specializing in artificial intelligence, Juan Manuel Corchado. According to the University of Salamanca’s official press release, the two sides signed a memorandum of cooperation outlining a roadmap for joint media projects, particularly in digital innovation, content production, and specialized training. The delegation also toured Jilin University’s AI College, where researchers presented ongoing projects in robotics, algorithm development, and artificial intelligence models. During the visit, Corchado also toured the School of Communication at Northeast Normal University to discuss the academic exchange program. The visit concluded with a meeting with Cao Lubao (曹路宝), minister of the Propaganda Department of the CCP Jilin Provincial Committee, where both sides discussed cooperation in higher education and technological innovation.

Xinhua and TASS Sign Cooperation Strategy Agreement

On September 2, 2025, Russia’s TASS news agency and China’s state Xinhua News Agency signed a cooperation strategy for 2026–2030 in Beijing, on the sidelines of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to China for the 25th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a regional intergovernmental organization founded in 2001 that groups China, Russia, and several Central and South Asian states. The agreement was signed by TASS Director General Andrey Kondrashov and Xinhua President Fu Hua (傅華). Under the agreement, the two agencies pledge to exchange multilingual news feeds, collaborate on AI in editorial work, and share photo and video content. Both agencies also agreed to cooperate within the Global Fact-Checking Network (GFCN), a Russia-based body co-founded in 2025 by TASS

Gongong News Agency Courts Malaysian and Malawi Representatives in Guangzhou

On May 15, 2026, Huang Weijian (黃偉健), director of the international communication center of Hong Kong-based Gonggong News Agency (共工新聞社), attended a cross-border and overseas media forum held at the ICC Trade Centre (ICC環貿大廈) in Guangzhou. Huang delivered a keynote address titled “Rooted in Hong Kong, Connected to the World, Promoting the International Dissemination of Chinese Culture” (立足香港 聯通全球 推動中華文化國際傳播), in which he described the agency’s mandate using the CCP-sanctioned formulation “telling China’s story well, spreading China’s voice” (講好中國故事、傳播中國聲音), and invoked Hong Kong’s role as a platform “backed by the motherland, connected to the world” (背靠祖國、聯通世界). During the event, the agency’s international communication center presented a copy of the Gonggong News Agency Publicity Booklet (共工新聞社宣傳冊) to the deputy commercial consul of the Malaysian Consulate General in Guangzhou, after which the two sides exchanged views on deepening international communication and cultural exchange cooperation, though no formal agreement was announced. Also present was Jani Grey Kasunda, a Malawian student of International Relations in China who has declared his candidacy for the Malawian presidency in the 2030 general elections — a contest still four years away — and who has separately courted Chinese investment in Malawi’s agriculture, mining, energy, and digital sectors. At the forum, Kasunda praised the agency’s communication philosophy and expressed interest in future China-Africa media cooperation.

CMG and Naftemporiki Sign Memorandum of Understanding

On October 30, 2023, Shen Haixiong (慎海雄), president of China Media Group (CMG), signed a memorandum with Dimitris Melissanidis, owner of the financial newspaper Naftemporiki. The Chinese and Greek partners agreed, according to a release from CMP, to cooperate in international news reporting, finance, and joint production of economic news. The signing of the agreement happened on the sidelines of a CMG-hosted China-Greece Belt and Road Dialogue” (中國希臘”一帶一路”對話會) in Athens, marking the Belt and Road’s 10th anniversary. Former Greek president Prokopios Pavlopoulos, Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, and Chinese Ambassador to China Xiao Junzheng (肖軍正) also attended the ceremony.
