CMG Inks Media and Tourism Deals in Hungary

On May 10, 2024, China Media Group (中央廣播電視總台) signed agreements with two Hungarian institutions during President Xi Jinping’s (習近平) state visit to Hungary. The agreements were signed by Shen Haixiong (慎海雄), deputy head of the Publicity Department of the Chinese Communist Party and director of China Media Group, with the Hungarian Media Services Support and Asset Management Fund and the Hungarian Tourism Agency. Xi and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán (維克多·奧班) “witnessed” the signing ceremony, and the agreements were “included in” the list of outcome documents from Xi’s state visit from May 8-10. The memorandums aim to strengthen cultural exchanges through news information exchange, joint program production, and media technology exchange. The Hungarian Media Fund oversees state-owned media outlets, including Hungarian National Television and Radio, while the Tourism Agency, led by CEO Könnyid László (柯尼德·拉斯洛), manages Hungary’s tourism promotion efforts.

China Media Group and Atameken Sign Cooperation MOU

Atameken TV, Kazakhstan’s broadcasting network, signed a cooperation memorandum with the state-run China Media Group on September 2, 2025, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin. The agreement was among 14 bilateral media cooperation deals CMG struck with broadcasters from 13 countries during the summit, covering news reporting, joint programming, cultural activities, technological innovation, industry development, personnel exchanges, and media resource sharing. The CMG partnership with Atameken TV is part of China’s broader efforts to strengthen SCO media cooperation.

CMG Rolls Out Promotional Film Ads in 28 Countries

China Media Group’s “Thousand Overseas Screens” (海外千屏) program will deploy promotional content for the “China Travel with Chinese Films” (跟著電影遊中國) campaign across more than 600 public screens in 28 countries during 2026, according to a February 4 announcement at a special promotion event in Shenzhen. The initiative, co-hosted by the China Film Administration (CFA) and CMG, places content in high-visibility locations including cinema chains in seven major US cities, shopping centers, and diplomatic venues. Promotional materials feature 2026 Spring Festival films alongside tourism content about filming locations, supporting China’s international communication strategy to present a “credible, lovable, respectable China” (可信、可愛、可敬的中國). The campaign integrates with CMG’s Spring Festival Gala global viewing events and Chinese embassy receptions, demonstrating coordinated party-state soft power deployment through commercial-cultural channels.

Xi Publishes Article in Portuguese Newspaper Ahead of 2018 State Visit

On December 3, 2018, Chinese President Xi Jinping published a signed article in Portugal’s weekly newspaper Diário de Notícias titled “Friendship that Transcends Time and Space, Partners for the Future” (跨越時空的友誼 面向未來的夥伴) ahead of his state visit. The article quoted the 16th century Portuguese poet Luís de Camões on Portugal’s geographic position and referenced historical cultural exchanges, including the Portuguese adoption of Chinese silk-making techniques. through Belt and Road initiatives, positioning Portugal as a “key hub” that connects the land and maritime Silk Roads. The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road is a key component of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, a major development plan that aims to connect China with the rest of the world. During the visit, Xi and the then-President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa signed a Belt and Road Memorandum of Understanding, making Portugal the first Western European nation to formally join the initiative.

Changsha Propaganda Office Runs Joint Event with African Media

On July 15, 2025, the China-Africa International Communication Alliance (Changsha), a grouping directed by the Propaganda Office of the Changsha Municipal Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (長沙市委宣傳部) and hosted by Changsha Media Group (長沙市廣播電視集團), launched its “Harmonious Voices Action” (融聲行動), what it characterized as a “network reaching Africa.” According to a readout on the program by local state media in Changsha, Changsha Broadcasting established “deep cooperation” with six African media organizations and also set up the “Changsha Media Group Africa International Media Cooperation Base” (長沙廣電非洲國際媒體合作基地). They include Sierra Leone’s Tourism Channel (旅遊頻道), Ghana’s Norbea Media Group/ABC TV, Ethiopia’s Fana Media (芳納廣播公司), Nigeria’s News Investigators, the Botswana-based Oriental Post (非洲華僑週報), and the Senegal International Media Station. More than 20 institutions, including the Community of Shared Destiny Research Center of the Communication University of China (中國傳媒大學人類命運共同體研究院), separately joined the broader alliance, which officials said would help “China-Africa friendship stories shine more brightly through cultural exchange” and enable African media to serve as “companions, discoverers and narrators of China’s story” (同行者、發現者與講述者).

CMG and Belarus National TV Sign Deepened Cooperation Agreement

Chinese Ambassador Attends Media Forum on PRC Anniversary

On September 18, 2019, the Chinese Embassy in Mexico, under Ambassador Zhu Qingqiao (祝青橋), co-hosted a media forum with the Latin American branch of China Today (今日中國) and the Mexican Senate to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. The event, titled “China-Mexico and China-Latin America Relations in the New Era” (新時代的中墨、中拉關係), gathered over 100 participants including Mexican Senate committee chairs, Foreign Ministry officials, and media executives from both countries. Ambassador Zhu highlighted China’s transformation over 70 years from a “poor agricultural nation” to the world’s second-largest economy and from an “isolated and conservative country” to an active participant in global governance, according to the Chinese Embassy. Mexican officials praised China’s development achievements and emphasized shared interests as developing nations, expressing Mexico’s commitment to prioritizing relations with China and participating in the Belt and Road Initiative (一帶一路). The forum featured discussions on objective bilateral reporting and strengthening media cooperation, with live broadcasts on Mexican Parliament TV and China Today‘s Spanish Facebook account.

Malaysia and China Sign MOU on Content Production and Sharing

China’s National Radio and Television Administration (国家广播电视总局) and Malaysia’s Ministry of Communications signed a bilateral memorandum of understanding on September 26, 2024. The agreement aimed to “deepen practical cooperation” in areas including content creation, program exchange, and technological development while addressing challenges and opportunities brought by new technologies to traditional broadcasting. Meeting in Beijing during the 50th anniversary year of China-Malaysia diplomatic relations, China’s broadcasting chief Cao Shumin (曹淑敏) met with Malaysian Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. The memorandum comes as both sides highlighted recent successes in “joint production and industry cooperation” (联合制作, 产业合作), with Malaysia noting that broadcasting has played a “positive role in enhancing mutual understanding” between the two nations.

Voice of Vietnam and China Media Group Signed a Cooperation Agreement

Voice of Vietnam (越南之聲廣播電台) and China Media Group (中央廣播電視總台) signed a cooperation agreement on April 14, 2025, during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s (習近平) state visit to Vietnam. The agreement, marking the 75th anniversary of Vietnam-China diplomatic relations established on January 18, 1950, aims to “strengthen bilateral media relations through joint reporting on significant developments in Vietnam-China relations,” according to VOV. The cooperation framework includes exchanging and co-producing media content, supporting reporters from both organizations, conducting staff training exchanges, and sharing communication technology. This collaboration aligns with the “Humanitarian Exchange Year 2025” initiatives and follows VOV’s working visit to CMG headquarters in Beijing in March 2025. The timing coincides with Xi’s broader Southeast Asian tour aimed at strengthening regional ties amid escalating US-China trade tensions.
