China’s Media Toll on Taiwanese Democracy
Official state media warn a popular Taiwanese television host to avoid observing local elections — or risk losing PRC market access.

The Department of Finance of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region is the body responsible for formulating and implementing national and regional fiscal plans and policies. As Guangxi is seen by the central government as a gateway between China and Southeast Asian countries, the department has also supported national infrastructure development plans for a regional industrial cooperation zone as well as outward-facing media initiatives. In 2020, for example, the department allocated 43.79 million yuan (about 6.5 million US dollars) to support the establishment of an “ASEAN information harbor.” This included 9 million yuan to Guangxi Radio and Television (廣西廣播電視台), which set up a “full-media system for multilingual reporting, editing, broadcasting and distribution.”According to China’s corporate registry, the department wholly owns the Guangxi Publishing & Media Group (廣西出版傳媒集團), whose subsidiaries — Guangxi People’s Publishing House (廣西人民出版社) and Lijiang Publishing House (灕江出版社) — have formed partnerships with the Nanning Media Convergence Center (南寧市融媒體中心) to promote their publications overseas.
