Kabul News TV was a Pashto-language television channel based in Afghanistan that operated for approximately one decade before halting operations in November 2022. The channel had broadcast “on a national level and beyond,” according to TOLOnews, which reported that economic challenges were the primary reason for its closure. Hafizullah Barakzai, head of the Council of Afghanistan’s Journalists, stated that “economic challenges” led to the channel’s collapse, reflecting broader difficulties facing Afghan media following the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. The channel continues operations only through social media platforms. Its closure occurred amid Afghanistan’s media crisis, with the National Journalists Union reporting that approximately 280 media organizations halted operations in the year following the former government’s fall, leaving around 70 percent of journalists unemployed.

América Televisión was founded on December 15, 1958, by Antonio Umbert, Nicanor Gonzalez, and Avelino Aramburú. As the second oldest Peruvian channel after TV Perú and the first commercial channel in Peru, it has been shaping the country’s television landscape for over six decades. Tea FM is an East Malaysian Chinese and English-language radio station jointly that began broadcasting in Kuching on August 1, 2015, and in Kota Kinabalu on August 8, 2015, before being officially launched on November 28, 2015, by Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem. Tea FM is Sarawak’s first Mandarin Chinese and English local private radio station, with content described by the owners as 60% Chinese and 40% English, targeting listeners aged 20 to 40. The station broadcasts on 102.7 FM in Kuching and 102.8 FM in Kota Kinabalu, operating as a 24-hour service from Crown Towers at Jalan Padungan, Kuching.

RTV

RTV is a Bengali-language satellite and cable television channel that launched on 26 December 2005 and has become one of Bangladesh’s most popular television channels. Originally founded by Mohammad Mosaddak Ali Falu, a former Bangladesh Nationalist Party parliamentarian, the channel commenced test broadcasts on 1 December 2005 and officially began transmissions on 26 December that year. When Falu was jailed in 2007, RTV changed hands and went over to Bengal Group, with multiple sources noting that “a state intelligence agency was involved in this share transfer”. The channel is now owned by Bengal Media Corporation, part of the Bengal Group of Industries controlled by Awami League member of parliament Morshed Alam (মোর্শেদ আলম) and his family. RTV is headquartered in the BSEC Building in Kawran Bazar, Dhaka and primarily airs entertainment and news programming. The channel has expanded internationally, and has launched its own video-on-demand service called RTV Plus on 24 May 2020.

The Independent

The Independent was an English-language daily newspaper published in Dhaka, Bangladesh, that launched on March 26, 1995, by Beximco Group, making it the first four-color, 16-page daily in the country and the first to use imported newsprint. The newspaper was owned by Bangladesh Export Import Company Limited, commonly known as Beximco Group, which was founded in the 1970s by brothers Ahmed Sohail Fasihur Rahman and Salman Fazlur Rahman. The Independent introduced Bangladesh’s first 32-page weekend magazine and underwent a rebranding in October 2010 with an enhanced focus on fast and authentic news coverage. The newspaper ceased printed publication in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ceased all operations in 2022.

Canal 2 International

Canal 2 International is Cameroon’s first private television channel, initially launched in 2001 and rebranded under its current name in 2004. Based in Douala’s Akwa district, the network is owned by Emmanuel Chatue’s TV+ Group. Initially broadcasting primarily music content until its temporary closure in 2003, Canal 2 evolved into a general-interest station focused on continuous news coverage, entertainment, and sports, broadcasting in both French and English. The channel gained prominence through its production of situation comedies and image-based news broadcasts, and has expanded its programming to include numerous drama series such as “Tourbillon de Passions,” “El Diablo,” and “Avenida Brasil.” In 2020, Canal 2 made history by hosting the first live televised press conference for a Cameroonian artist, when Josco L’inquiéteur’s single “Les Histoires de Sangmelima” was unveiled. The channel is owned by telecommunications engineer Emmanuel Chatue, who started as a cable distributor in Douala before launching his television venture.
