Willax Televisión

Willax Televisión (威萊克斯電視台) is a Peruvian free-to-air television channel based in Lima. It was founded in 2010 by journalists Gilberto Hume and Cecilia Valenzuela as an online news channel and later moved to cable television. In November 2015 it was bought by the business group of Erasmo Jesús Rolando Wong Lu Vega (黃業生), a Chinese-Peruvian businessman and former owner of the Wong supermarket chain. Wong’s group, which holds a majority stake in the channel, turned it into a general-interest broadcaster on Lima’s digital terrestrial service. The channel’s formal ownership is opaque. Reporters Without Borders’ Media Ownership Monitor found that 99.99 percent of its shares were held by Latin America Media Investment Ltd, a company not constituted in Peru, so its ultimate shareholders could not be verified. International media have described Willax as conservative and right-wing, and Wong signed the Madrid Charter, a manifesto opposing left-wing governments in Ibero-America. Willax nonetheless has close ties to Chinese state content distribution. In November 2024, it signed a trilateral agreement with Chongqing Jiazuo Film and Culture Media (重慶佳左影視文化傳媒有限公司) and Classic Media China Internacional SAC (經典傳媒中國國際有限公司) to air a “China Time Slot” (中國時段) of Spanish-dubbed Chinese series and documentaries. The launch was guided by China’s State Council Information Office and National Radio and Television Administration, and co-hosted by the propaganda office of the Chongqing CCP Committee. Wong also presides over the association that manages Lima’s Chinese-funded Centro de la Amistad Peruano China (Peruvian-Chinese Friendship Center).
