The Independent

The Independent was an English-language daily newspaper published in Dhaka, Bangladesh, that launched on March 26, 1995, by Beximco Group, making it the first four-color, 16-page daily in the country and the first to use imported newsprint. The newspaper was owned by Bangladesh Export Import Company Limited, commonly known as Beximco Group, which was founded in the 1970s by brothers Ahmed Sohail Fasihur Rahman and Salman Fazlur Rahman. The Independent introduced Bangladesh’s first 32-page weekend magazine and underwent a rebranding in October 2010 with an enhanced focus on fast and authentic news coverage. The newspaper ceased printed publication in April 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and ceased all operations in 2022.

Daily Naya Diganta

The Daily Naya Diganta, meaning “Daily New Horizons,” is a Bengali daily newspaper published in Bangladesh since 2004. Part of Diganta Media Corporation, the publication was owned by Mir Quasem Ali, a prominent Jamaat-e-Islami politician who was executed in September 2016 for war crimes committed during Bangladesh’s 1971 independence war. Alamgir Mohiuddin serves as editor of the newspaper, which operates alongside sister television channel Diganta TV, launched in August 2008. The publication faced legal challenges when Bangladesh’s Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu accused the newspaper of carrying out “propaganda” against the International Crimes Tribunal, and a Daily Naya Diganta reporter was cautioned for misrepresenting testimony in January 2012.

The Sun

The Sun Malaysia is a national English-language daily newspaper published in tabloid format, founded on June 1, 1993, by Sun Media Corporation Sdn Bhd. The newspaper briefly halted publication on June 30, 1994, for restructuring before resuming operations a month later. In April 2002, The Sun transitioned to a free distribution model, becoming Malaysia’s first national free daily newspaper. The publication operates Monday through Friday, targeting white-collar workers and urban youth with news briefs designed for busy executives.

ATN

ATN Bangla is a Bangladeshi Bengali-language satellite television channel that launched on 15 July 1997, making it Bangladesh’s first privately-owned television channel and the first to broadcast via satellite. Founded by Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman, the channel is owned by Multimedia Production Company and broadcasts from Dhaka’s Kawran Bazar neighborhood. ATN Bangla became the first Bengali-language television channel in the world to broadcast worldwide. The channel gained international recognition when it won the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting Award at the 32nd International Emmy Awards on 22 November 2004 for its documentary “Amrao Pari” (We Too Can), which was shot and directed by eighteen Bangladeshi teenagers and focused on the story of Abul Khaer, a 9-year-old boy who stopped a passenger train from approaching a disjointed rail track.

The Financial Express

The Financial Express is an English-language daily newspaper established in 1993 in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and describes itself as the “First Financial Daily in Bangladesh.” Owned by International Publications Limited, the publication was Bangladesh’s second-largest English-language newspaper as of 2021, focusing primarily on business and economic issues including international economic news. Founding editor AHM Moazzem Hossain, a Bangladeshi journalist, led the publication until his death in 2018, with the newspaper experiencing significant losses during the COVID-19 pandemic when news editor Abdullah M Hasan and executive editor Shahiduzzaman Khan both died from the virus in 2020 and 2021 respectively. The publication has received recognition through the Japan-based Developing Asia Journalism Awards.

Panamericana Televisión

Panamericana Televisión, also known as Canal 5, is a Peruvian free-to-air television network that began broadcasting on October 16, 1959, founded by the Delgado Parker and Lindley families. The channel’s programming centers on news and entertainment, anchored by its flagship newscast, 24 Horas, the morning show “Buenos Días Perú,” and the long-running Sunday investigative program “Panorama.” 

El Comercio

El Comercio, founded in May 1839, stands as Peru’s oldest newspaper and one of the oldest Spanish-language publications worldwide. The Lima-based daily was established by José Manuel Amunátegui y Muñoz and Alejandro Villota, but ownership passed to the influential Miró Quesada family in 1876 following the War of the Pacific. The newspaper survived a four-year closure during Chilean occupation (1879-1883) and later endured six years of military expropriation under Juan Velasco Alvarado’s regime (1974-1980). El Comercio maintains a circulation exceeding 100,000 and is characterized as conservative in its editorial outlook and oriented toward business interests. Elisabeth Dulanto Baquerizo de Miró Quesada, a family member who owns El Comercio Group, signed the Madrid Charter and has helped organize events for the anti-leftist Madrid Forum, established by Spain’s far-right Vox party.

Malay Mail

The Malay Mail, Malaysia’s oldest English-language newspaper, was first published on December 1, 1896, when Kuala Lumpur served as the capital of the newly established Federated Malay States. Originally founded as a four-page publication by former civil servant JHM Robson, the newspaper became the first daily newspaper to appear in the Federated Malay States. After 122 years of print operations, the Malay Mail ceased its print edition on December 1, 2018, and transitioned to become a fully digital news portal. The publication, which once operated under the tagline “The Paper That Cares,” now focuses on providing local and international news coverage through its digital platform. Currently owned by Malay Mail Sdn. Bhd under Ancom Berhad, the publication is led by Dato’ Siew Ka Wei as publisher, with an editorial team including managing editor Leslie Lau and executive editor Joan Lau.

Canal 2 International

Canal 2 International is Cameroon’s first private television channel, initially launched in 2001 and rebranded under its current name in 2004. Based in Douala’s Akwa district, the network is owned by Emmanuel Chatue’s TV+ Group. Initially broadcasting primarily music content until its temporary closure in 2003, Canal 2 evolved into a general-interest station focused on continuous news coverage, entertainment, and sports, broadcasting in both French and English. The channel gained prominence through its production of situation comedies and image-based news broadcasts, and has expanded its programming to include numerous drama series such as “Tourbillon de Passions,” “El Diablo,” and “Avenida Brasil.” In 2020, Canal 2 made history by hosting the first live televised press conference for a Cameroonian artist, when Josco L’inquiéteur’s single “Les Histoires de Sangmelima” was unveiled. The channel is owned by telecommunications engineer Emmanuel Chatue, who started as a cable distributor in Douala before launching his television venture.
