2026 China ASEAN Urban Media Roundtable Gathers ASEAN Media

On September 12, 2026, China’s Nanning International Communication Center (南寧國際傳播中心) hosted a roundtable event that brought together media representatives from Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Timor-Leste, along with scholars and students from Guangxi. The roundtable, themed “Coexistence and Integration: Forging a New Vision for China-ASEAN Cultural Exchanges and Mutual Learning,” was organized ahead of the 23rd China-ASEAN Expo, a major trade fair for Chinese and Southeast Asian businesses. Organizers said the event aimed to build cooperation in audiovisual production and people-to-people exchanges, and to contribute to “the media’s strength to build a closer China-ASEAN community of common destiny,” a Xi Jinping-era foreign policy slogan that presents China-led international cooperation as serving shared values and goals, while, in practice, prioritizing China’s national interests. The event also focused on topics such as cultural tourism promotion and economic and media cooperation opportunities of the Pinglu Canal (平陸運河). During the roundtable, the Nanning Media Convergence Center (南寧融媒體中心) signed several agreements with Southeast Asian media. These included a broadcast agreement to air a food documentary series on Thai television channels, an MOU to deepen talent exchange and joint productions with media in ASEAN countries, and an agreement with several Chinese publishing houses to promote their publications overseas through foreign language editions. Also released after the event was a document titled China-ASEAN (Nanning) Cross-border Media Cooperation Vision (中國—東盟[南寧]跨國媒體合作願景), which detailed participant commitments to cooperate in content sharing, promoting urban development, and AI.
